  • Explore the role that the community must play in making their neighborhoods better and safer places in which to live and work
  • Week 2 - Understand the definition of community and its role in community policing
  • Recognize the importance of community building in developing structure to harness the power of the community
  • Be able to conduct an evironmental scan of the community to better understand its needs and its assets
  • Develop a plan to introduce officers to the community
  • Learn to deal with issues of human diversity in the community
  • Explore the role that the community must play in making their neighborhoods better and safer places in which to live and work
  • Week 3 - Understand the application of collaborative, community-based problem solving
  • Acknowledge the role of the community in identifying, prioritizing and solving problems
  • Identify problems of crime, fear of crime and disorder
  • Determine key stakeholders
  • Appreciate the value of community input and of exploring all options before taking action
  • Develop a plan to monitor and document progress toward the goal
  • Host effective problem solving sessions with the community
  • Week 4 - Understand the special needs and concerns of:
    • Youth
    • Women & girls
    • Persons over 65
    • Minorities
    • Victims of violence
  • Craft problem-solving strategies to deal with:
    • Drugs
    • Family violence
    • School safety
    • Gangs
